The Spine consists of 24 vertebras connected together, and serves a much larger purpose than just supporting one’s weight, and holding them upright. The spinal cord has an important function in the nervous system. The nerves that surround the spinal cord are very important since they are the connection way for nerve impulses to and from the body and brain. The spinal cord also a plays a significant role for quick movement away from danger. For instance one’s hand moving away, when something hot is touched are through impulses that are sent to the spinal cord. This shows how important the spine is to a person. Humans in general have very bad habits, which cause stress to the spinal cord, which results in back pain.

One most common way a person develops back problems is due to improper lifting techniques. Most commonly this is observed when shovelling snow. A person may choose to load their shovel over its maximum capacity and then lift the shovel using their back and arms as strength. A person who is shovelling usually leans over and attempts to lift the shovel using force from their back and arm. However, the job of shovelling can be done a lot faster and much safely, if the person uses proper technique. The technique for shovelling or lifting heavy items is by grounding their feet to the ground and bending their knees. While doing this, the back should be straight. The shovel or large object should be beside the person lifting, since leaning over to reach the object will cause unnecessary stress on the spine. By creating a momentum and using the power of legs benefits a person from getting back problems. Further, it is important to take note that it is unsafe to hold heavy objects higher than a person’s armpit and lower than their knees. Further, it is also important to know that lifting objects that have a weight, that is 20% more than that person’s body weight can cause harm. Simply, asking for help from another person does not do any harm. In the long run it actually prevents a person from getting back and spine related injuries. Further, bad habits that cause stress on the spine can be observed when a person uses a laptop or computer.

In this century, with the quick advances in technology, many humans at school or at work, spend numerous hours in front of a laptop or a computer. Usually, a typical person does not follow proper ergonomics, hence harming their body, especially their back and spine. To be comfortable a person may slouch and as time proceeds unknowingly a person usually tends to get closer to the screen. This largely affects the disks in the vertebrae. When someone is sitting still these disks usually get poor blood circulation. Movement nourishes these disks. The worst posture is observed sitting as leaning forward. This is because it locks the pelvis and flexes the spine, which in turn puts stress on vertebrate. The problem arises because uneven pressure is put on the spine, which puts it at a high risk of rupture. An easy fix to this problem is by moving around every 20 minutes, since such movement nourishes the disks. Further, improving posture is very important. When on a computer it is important to sit straight up, back straight, with feet flat on the ground. It is important that the monitor is roughly at eye level. Also, it is important to remove items from the back pockets of pants such as a wallet, since it affects the alignment to the spine, and can cause unnecessary stress. Poor physical fitness also leads to back pain.
