Back Injuries Occur Is From Severe Trauma

According to the "American Chiropractic Association" 50% of all working Americans have back pain each year and 80% develop back pain at some point in their lives. In many ways, having a healthy back equates to being able to have a healthy life because the arms, legs, and neck all connect to the back. It is important to know the causes of back pain, what can be done to prevent it, and how it is commonly treated.
One obvious way that back injuries occur is from severe trauma such as a car accident or collision while playing sports. There are a few ways that are less obvious but occur more often than serious sports injuries and accidents. Each day people use there back, whether they are sleeping on it, walking, sitting, or exercising. Just like a cars wheels gradually become misaligned due to potholes, sharp turns, and frequent breaking, the human back can grow misaligned from life's stresses on it. According to Nick Shamie, MD, associate professor of orthopedic neurosurgery at UCLA, "Not stretching, not paying attention to your movements, and years of wear and tear" all can "wreck your back". Many people are idle all week and then try to play sports or do extensive yard work projects on the weekend without stretching and warming up in some way. Sometimes these behaviors can lead to a sudden back injury, but more often the accumulation of wear and tear will lead to back pain down the road. Another cause of back pain is from being out of shape, more specifically over weight. Those who are over weight, especially those who are obese, are putting increased strain and tension on their back. Being out of shape and/or overweight can lead to poor posture. It is important to routinely stretch and exercise the stabilizing muscles to help keep good posture, avoid back injuries, and take pressure off of certain muscles and joints by building strong supporting muscles. A common accident that causes back pain or injury is from poor lifting technique. Many people do not lift with the proper form of using ones knees and keeping the back straight. Usually people do not lift properly because they are not thinking about their form and/or they are mentally tired. Although many people understand the proper way to lift, many do not practice it. Although back pain can occur from a sudden injury, many can be prevented.
With so many people reporting back pain, it can seem to be an impossible task to avoid it. However, there are multiple ways to help prevent it. One way that can help to prevent back pain is to make a conscious effort to be aware of ones posture. This includes awareness of how one walks, sleeps, and sits in their car, office chair, or couch. It is important to make sure that one has a good mattress and an office chair that supports the back. A great way to keep a healthy back is to get in the routine of stretching. Many peoples lives are quite sedentary. The human back does not like sitting down and much as many people enjoy sitting down. The back has discs which are spongy by nature, which is good because it adds cushion, but too much sitting is harmful to them. This is because sitting still too long does not stretch out the sponge like discs and allow them to get blood supply. Stretching and exercise helps circulation to the discs, providing nourishment. Even though many people are accustomed to going and getting a physical from their family doctor or a routine cleaning at the dentist, many neglect their back until it is too late. It is a good idea to go to a chiropractor for routine realignments and checkups just like it is a good idea to go to a dentist for preventative cleanings. Taking the time to stretch and exercise is part of living a healthy lifestyle. Doing those two things as well as eating healthy will prevent obesity and therefore help to prevent back pain. Living a healthy lifestyle will help to prevent weekend injuries that occur while doing yard work or playing a sports. Even when one lives a healthy lifestyle, they still have to be mindful when lifting. No matter how light something appears it will be, it must be approached with the same correct form used to lift something heavy. Practicing healthy posture, mindfulness, safe lifting technique, living a healthy lifestyle, and going for routine checkups at the chiropractor are all great ways to prevent back pain.
Chiropractors use multiple methods to improve their patients health. The most commonly used procedure is the chiropractor adjustment, or spinal manipulation. The purpose of the adjustment is to improve the alignment of the spine and improve the range of motion. Doing this helps to relieve pressure and nerve irritation. Chiropractors are also trained to provide nutritional knowledge to patients in order to direct them to eating healthier. Chiropractors are able to recommend diets specific to patients needs. Another valuable way that a chiropractor helps their patients is by teaching them important stretches and exercises to strengthen the spin and relieve back pain.
A human back takes a lot of stress over the course of a lifetime. Living a full and healthy life go hand in hand with having a functional and healthy back. It is critical to be mindful of the condition of ones spine and take preventive measures to ensure they have a healthy back. By incorporating a chiropractors expertise into ones life, they are taking an important step in preventing future back pain. Although many have back pain, it is good to know that there is a way to a pain free back!
